Akureyri Airport - AEY Akureyri

Owned by Isavia, Iceland’s Akureyri Airport (AEY) has a lengthy runway measuring 7,874’. It is a medium-sized airport with passenger traffic of 202,252 in 2018. Scheduled flights to Akureyri started in the late 1920s, thanks to Flugfelag Islands. However, construction of the actual airport only began in the early 1950s. Few years later, a new terminal was established. In 1973, Loftleioir and Flugfelag Islands merged into a single airline, Icelandair. A year later, another airline, Flugfelag Norourlands, was established in the town. This new airline brought in more charter and domestic flights. In 1997, the domestic flights division of Icelandair merged with Flugfelag Nordurlands into Flugfelag Islands or commonly known as Air Iceland Connect. There were renovations conducted in 2000 to accommodate international flights better. In 2006, an ambulance flight service with a specially equipped aircraft was initiated through Myflug under a government contract. Two (2) years later, the ambulance flight service moved its operations to the new Hangar 13. In 2009, a runway renovation was completed at Akureyri Airport. Shortly after, the airport added a new Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach navigational aid. Nearby cities include Myvatn, Reykjahlíð, and Skutustadir.
