Danville: Beyond West Virginia’s Coal Heritage
Danville, WV is a town in Boone County named after Dan Rock, its first postmaster. The town took other names before, such as “Newport” and “Red House”. The Circuit Court incorporated it in 1911.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Danville is during the months of April through June. Peak tourist season includes the months of May through July. People are least likely to visit the town in October. There are two (2) exciting events every June that tourists should experience at least once in their lives. First, West Virginia Coal Festival is a five-day event in Madison that aims to celebrate the coal mining heritage and industry in the state. The celebration includes historical lessons, live music, mining equipment exhibits, among others. Then, there is FestivALL in Charleston, which is one of the highlights of summer in West Virginia. It is a 10-day festival that promotes art experiences and entertainment. More than a hundred activities, exhibits, and performances await guests in this massive celebration of performance and visual arts.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Tourists should see The Coal House in Williamson. Designed by architect Hassel Hicks, it is a unique building made out of coal masonry. Back then, it was the only coal building in the state. Another interesting site nearby is the Williamson Field House, a historic field house constructed in the early 1950s. Primarily, it served as an auditorium and recreational center. Tourists may stay at any of the best hotels nearby, such as the Best Western Logan Inn, the nearby Comfort Motel, and the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Logan.
