Memphis Tennessee was the very first Hampton Inn opened to the public, featuring 128 rooms enclosed in a two-storey building. The trademark was sold to Promus Hotel Corporation five years later and was rebranded to cater for the middle market consumers of the hospitality industry.

Rough toilet papers, noisy cows and UFO sightings were just a few of the reasons why clients would request the company to comply to its guarantee, with over $6 million in free rooms given away during the 10 year period.
