Best Time to Visit
With a new terminal building, Hervey Bay Airport reopened in 2005 after a massive renovation. The runway was also extended to 6,562 feet. Sunshine Express Airlines used to have operations at the airport, providing a Brisbane route. However, it ceased operations in 2006 following QantasLink’s expression to introduce a Brisbane route at the airport. Currently, only three (3) airlines are operating at Hervey Bay Airport. QantasLink has scheduled flights to Brisbane. SEAIR Pacific has scheduled flights to Lady Elliot Island. Virgin Australia has scheduled flights to Sydney. In 2017, JETGO had plans to operate two (2) direct flights a week to Melbourne and direct flights to Brisbane. However, these flights did not have enough bookings to commence. There are plans to renovate the airport to increase its capacity. These plans involve the expansion of the passenger terminal and the establishment of a new cross-runway for general aviation purposes. Some of the best cities/towns near the airport include Orchid Beach, Fraser Island, and Kingfisher Bay.
