Alma: Town Upon a Hill with Lots of History
The settlement of the Germans, Swedes, Irish, and English men at Alma, Kansas during the late 18th century has given the town its traditional European vibe that is, up until the present day, is very evident. It is nestled atop of the Flint Hills and has no more than 1000 in population. Alma is known as the “City of Native Stone.” It is a great countryside destination, whether just for a short trip or a long, unwinding one.
Best Time to Visit
Alma, KS is the hottest and the busiest during the middle of the year from months of June to August. These are also the months when moderate to heavy rains are expected in town. If you want to avoid the huge crowd of tourists and the hassle of getting wet, come around April or October when the weather is still favorable and Alma KS hotels are cheaper. Alma City of Native Stone Festival takes place every October as well.

The charming Wamego Inn and Suites is one of the highly-rated hotels near Alma. It is also one of the cheapest and has a team of wonderful staffs. Holiday Inn Express & Suites Manhattan and Candlewood Suites Manhattan are both 2-star hotels which are also great options if you are planning a trip into town. The Flint Hills where Alma is situated is a pretty popular hiking trail where you can find diverse flora and fauna. Take a stroll along Alma’s Historical Downtown where you can find many quaint shops, some with interesting antiques for sale. Wabaunsee County Historical Museum is also worth a visit especially if you love history.
