Derby: Mountain Biking Mecca
The laid-back town of Derby in northeast Tasmania, Australia is a well-known destination for mountain biking which began when a network of bike trails opened in 2015 along the wooded hills surrounding the town. The town has become famous for it that Derby even hosted the Enduro World Series in 2017 and attracted tens of thousands of visitors in the area. Set near the Ringarooma River, Derby has beautiful sceneries consisting of mountains and rainforest.
Best Time to Visit
The Derby bike trail is open all year round although an annual winter closure takes place affecting only the Blue Tier and Big Chook areas. The trails are in tip-top condition from April to mid-June and September to mid-November so this is the peak season when the town welcomes the bulk of its visitors and as expected rates in hotels surge. When October comes, the town hosts the Derby River Derby, an annual friendly river race featuring homemade rafts with thousands of people from across the state filling the Derby, AU hotels to capacity.

Hop on to the Derby Schoolhouse Museum which was built in 1897 and is now used to display the town’s social history. A visit to the Derby Tin Mine Centre is a must-do to learn about the town’s early days and even get the chance to pan for gold and find nuggets. Spend the night at Weldborough Hotel also known for its delicious pub food. Or take lodgings at The Derby located only 2 minutes from the trail head.
