The Indian Defense Authorities built the airport in 1948 during the Police Action Operation on the state. After the operation, the airport was not maintained and it was not used. It was rebuilt and reopened in the 1980s. The Public Works Department maintains the reopened airport. Solapur Airport is able to handled larger aircrafts including Boeing 737s. It is also able to serve Airbus A319, Bombardier, and ATR 72. Because of the lack of space to expand, a new airport is planned for Solapur.
