Sterling: Home of Significant Presidential Heritage Sites
Formerly known as “Hardware Capital of the World”, Sterling, IL is a city in Whiteside County. It has always thrived in the manufacturing and steel industry. It became a town in 1836, following the merger of Harrisburg and Chatham. Its name is in honor of Mayor James Sterling. It was incorporated as a city in 1857.

The best time to visit Sterling, Illinois is during the months of April through October. Peak tourist season is during summer. Christmas, on the other hand, is when people are least likely to visit the city. Every September, Fiesta Day Parade is held to celebrate the Latino heritage and culture, and the Mexican Independence Day. Then, every August, locals celebrate the Whiteside County Fair. During the event, people enjoy activities like demolition derby, harness racing, livestock show, pro bull riding, truck and tractor pulls, among others.

Lincoln Monument State Memorial, a bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln made by Leonard Crunelle in Dixon is a must-see. It was made in honor of Lincoln’s service in the Black Hawk War in the early 19th century. Another interesting attraction is Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home in Dixon. As its name implies, it is where Reagan grew up since 1920. The site has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982.
