Blue Grass Airport – LEX Blue Grass
Amid world-renowned racehorse farms and directly across Keeneland Race Course sits Lexington, Kentucky’s Blue Grass Airport. One of the fastest growing airports in the U.S., it serves an average of 1.2 million passengers a year and is the third busiest in Kentucky, behind Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport’s 8.8 million and Louisville International Airport’s 3.8 million. Occupying 911 acres (3.69 square kilometers), it is home to the Aviation Museum of Kentucky which houses restored aircraft and memorabilia over 25,000 square feet of exhibit space.
Best Time to Visit
Originally constructed with a star-shaped layout, Blue Grass Airport has two runways: the 7,004-foot asphalt 4/22, and the newer 4,000-foot concrete 9/27, which opened August 4, 2010 to replace the 3,500 foot 8/26. LEX’s current main terminal building became operational in 1977. On April 18, 2007, an extension of Concourse B was opened, adding six boarding gates with four new jet bridges. Some gates are assigned for use by the four major airlines that serve LEX – Gates A1 and A2 for United, Gates B1, B2, and B4 for American, Gate B3 for Allegiant Air, and Gates B5, B7, and B8 for Delta. LEX is the airport of choice for those heading to Lexington-Fayette, Clarksville, Louisville, and Radcliff.
